Casino Slot Machines
February 1st, 2010 |
Slot machines, also known as fruit and poker machines outside of the United States, are the most common and widely-known form of gambling available in modern casinos. A basic slot machine consists of a series of wheels, either real or simulated on a computer screen, containing a number of different symbols on each wheel. Gamblers insert a pre-determined amount of money into the machine, and either pull a lever or push one or more buttons to spin the wheels. Once the wheels stop, the symbols that are shown determine whether or not the gambler wins a prize.
Modern casinos have large areas of the gaming floor dedicated to slot machines, often consisting of hundreds of machines lined up in uniform rows, with chairs or stools in front of each machine so that gamblers can play at the machines for long periods of time. The payment to play on a slot machine can vary from a penny or nickel a spin, to $100 games that are sectioned off in a special area of the casino, where gamblers receive special benefits for playing there, such as free alcoholic drinks.
A man named Charles Fey is credited with inventing the slot machine in the late 1800s. His first machine was built in San Francisco, and it consisted of three wheels with five symbols on each wheel: hearts, diamonds, spades, horseshoes, and the Liberty Bell. Due to the fact that 125 different combinations were possible with this design, he designed the machine so that only a small subset of these combinations would actually come out, simplifying the payout process. Throughout the early twentieth century, numerous copycats arouse all over the country, showing up in bowling alleys, barber shops, tobacco stores, and other similar establishments.
The simplest slot machines are purely games of chance. On these machines, once the gambler activates the game, there’s no way to affect the outcome. In some machines, the gambler can put in more money than the minimum required to play. By doing this, the machine changes the odds so that the gambler has a better chance of winning. Other machines are designed to display more than one design on the wheel once they’ve stopped, so that a gambler can win not only by lining up the front symbols, but also by lining up the symbols above and below. Although this appears to give the gambler an increased number of ways to win, the machine’s payout odds are still controlled. More complicated slot machines have a higher level of interactivity. Gamblers can use separate buttons underneath each wheel to stop them individually, and can respin wheels of their choosing after paying the machine more money.
With the increasing prevalence of computerized slot machines, gamblers have looked for ways to exploit possible bugs in the system in order to illicitly win big jackpots. For instance, early computer slot machines used poor random number generators, resulting in gamblers being able to recognize play patterns that led to predictable payouts.

Yeah now if we could get them so they just don’t take so much of our money that would be even better.
